What are the 5 Levels of Care Offered at Rehab Clinics?
If you’re looking to find the right rehab clinic near you to help you or someone close to you recover from drug or alcohol addiction, it’s important to understand the levels of care that are offered at different clinics before making your decision. This helps you make sure you pick a facility that can help you achieve the best outcome possible, whether it’s rehabilitation or prevention of addiction in the first place. Let’s take a look at the 5 levels of care offered at most rehab clinics.
Outpatient Services
The most common level of care provided by rehab centres is outpatient services. At outpatient services, addicts attend scheduled visits to a rehab clinic on a regular basis in order to receive therapy and treatment. They can come in as often as needed, but they don’t live at a clinic or stay overnight; instead, they go home after each visit. Many addicts start out with outpatient services before graduating to more intense levels of care if necessary.
Intensive Treatment
If someone is extremely addicted, they may need to undergo intensive treatment in order to effectively recover. Intensive rehab programs will consist of daily individual and group counselling sessions, as well as intense physical exercise. Other services that may be offered include occupational therapy, art therapy, music therapy and massage therapy. The intensity varies depending on what a person needs at that moment. This can last anywhere from one month to six months or more.
Residential/Inpatient Services
Residential or inpatient care, as it’s more commonly known, is perhaps one of the most intense levels of addiction treatment. This level offers a safe and structured environment for addicts to heal from their addictions by focusing on their physical, mental and emotional well-being. It can also be used to treat some behavioural disorders like schizophrenia or bipolar disorder.
Detox Inpatient Services
When a person is detoxing from drugs or alcohol, it’s important that they do so in a safe environment. There are many withdrawal symptoms that can cause additional problems if a person detoxes alone, such as seizures and delirium tremens. A supervised detox gives people access to professional medical staff who can monitor these symptoms and make sure their individual needs are met.
This level of care also includes all meals and sleeping arrangements, along with other rehabilitative services during recovery. It typically lasts between 1-3 weeks depending on what substance is being abused; however, there may be instances where detox inpatient services last longer than 3 weeks depending on each patient’s specific addiction history.
Extended or Inpatient Rehabilitation
As mentioned, it’s not uncommon for patients to require more than 30 days in rehab. In these cases, extended care is usually necessary. This level of care is offered as both inpatient and outpatient treatment. Inpatient care involves living at a rehabilitation facility while receiving professional addiction treatment 24 hours a day. While it’s one of the most effective levels of care, extended rehab can be prohibitively expensive depending on where you live and how many weeks or months you need to complete your treatment.
